Family Vacation Spots to See in Uganda

Uganda, the pearl of Africa is the best destination for family vacations in various places. Uganda generally has substantial natural resources for tourism, with a variety of landscapes and ecosystems, climates, and cultures. The magical African big five mammals like lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos. However, there are other species like antelopes, kobs, waterbucks, and more. Uganda is a birding paradise for birders. Some of the family vacation places to visit in Uganda include Jinja, where there is the source of the Nile. Entebbe, known as the city of beaches. Queen Elizabeth national park is the second largest park.  Murchison Falls National Park is the oldest and largest park commonly known as the park with most powerful falls in the whole world.

Lake Bunyonyi

Lake bunyonyi is in south-western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale, close to the border with Rwanda. Lake Bunyonyi is located in Kabale district, known as swiss of Africa, due to its beautiful scenery. The lake appeared from 2004 to 2009 on the UG 5,000/= note under the title “Lake Bunyonyi and terraces”. Lake Bunyonyi is the best destination for a family vacation and has various activities like zip lining, boat cruise, nature walk, canoeing, bird watching, and many more.

The Lake can be accessed by either road or air transport. By road transport using private or public vehicles taking Masaka -mbarara -kabale route taking about 6-7 hours however by air transport, visitors may fly from Entebbe international airport to Kisoro airstrip where they will have about an hour drive to lake Bunyonyi.

Entebbe is the best destination for family vacation due to the various beautiful sceneries. Entebbe is a town on a peninsula in Lake Victoria, in Central Uganda. Area beaches include busy Lido Beach, near Entebbe International Airport. The lakeside Uganda Wildlife Education Centre protects native animals in wetland, forest and savanna habitats. Nearby, Entebbe Botanical Garden has diverse plants, birds and monkeys. Also close by is the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which protects orphaned chimps.

Jinja.

Jinja is known as the adventure capital city for Uganda in the southern part. Jinja is where the source of the Nile begins in the Busoga sub-county. It sits along the northern shores of Lake Victoria, near the source of the White Nile, at an average elevation of 1,204 metres (3,950 ft) above sea level. Jinja has various activities for both adults and children, including quad biking, boat cruise, canoeing, water tubing, water rafting, water cycling, nature walks, zip lining in Mabira forest, water sliding, bungee jumping, cycle biking, and many more, thus making the best destination for a family vacation. Jinja is the nearest place to Kampala capital city, which takes about 2-3 hours using the Mukono route.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

The park covers an area of 1,978 square kilometres (764 sq mi) above the sea.  The park is home to 95 mammal species, 600 bird species, the best destination for a boat cruise on the kazinga channel, nature walks, and many more. As family vacation, children and adults may do game drive where they will spot various mammal species like lions, leopards, buffalos, mongoose, hippos, warthogs, water bucks, and bird species including blue turaco, long horned billed bird, handsome franklin, and a boat cruise which about 2-3 hours.

The park can be accessed by road and air transport. By air transport, visitors fly from Kajjassi or Entebbe International airport to mweya airstrip, which takes less than an hour. However, by road transport, visitors use private or public vehicles, they may use Mubende-fort portal route, which takes about 7-8 hours. Although the journey seems to be long, it is worth due to the beautiful scenery spotted along the way.

Murchison Falls National Park.

 

Murchison Falls National Park is the oldest and largest park in Uganda, located in the western part. The park covers an area of approximately 3,893 km2 (1,503 sq mi). The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile from east to west for a distance of about 115 km (71 mi). The park is a home of mammals, especially the big five species, including lions, leopards, buffalo, Rhinos, and elephants, and other species, bird species, and best destination for nature walks around the powerful falls in the whole world.

The park can be accessed by road or air transport. By air transport visitors may fly from Entebbe international airport to Pakuba airstrip, Bugungu airstrip and Chobe airstrip depending on the itinerary. However, by road transport, visitors may use private or public vehicles using either misindi route Gulu route which will take about 7-8 hours depending where which gate your using.

What is the best time for a family vacation in Uganda?

Although family vacations can be done annually, there is always the best season to tour with families, and that is the dry season. During the dry season, families enjoy Uganda with no rain.

However, its not a guarantee that it will not rain in the dry season, but there is little rain, so expect rain at any time during your family safari. This season,  visitors enjoy sundowners along the lake and riversides.

Wildlife safaris are thrilling during the dry season.  However, wet season can also work out for family vacations.
